WHAT IS HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition affecting the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart. The walls of the left ventricle become thick and stiff. Over time, the heart can't take in or pump out enough blood during each heartbeat to supply the body's needs.1 in every 100 to 200 people with HCM die suddenly
each year of cardiac arrest

NORMAL HEART VS. HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease in which the heart muscle becomes thickened (hypertrophied). The
thickened heart muscle can make it harder for the heart to pump blood.

WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS I SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?

The signs and symptoms of HCM can vary widely, even among members of the same family. Some people may have no symptoms at all, but others can experience:

Arrhythmia (irregular heart rate or rhythm)

Chest pain, especially during activity

Fatigue

Fluttering or pounding feeling in the chest

Heart murmur

Lightheadedness or dizziness

Fainting

Shortness of breath, especially during activity

Swelling in the feet, ankles, legs, belly or neck

WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Medications to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and its symptoms might include:

Beta blockers such as metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL), propranolol (Inderal, Innopran XL) or atenolol
(Tenormin)

Calcium channel blockers such as verapamil (Verelan, Calan SR,) or diltiazem (Cardizem, Tiazac)

CURRENT FACTS: SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH ( SCD) in young athletes

The #1 cause of Sudden Cardiac Arrest is called HCM(Hypertrophic
Cardiomyopathy)

1-250 students are at risk for sudden cardiac issues/syndrome.

1-500 humans have HCM

Young athletes are more than twice as likely to experience SCD than
young non-athletes.

LifeSavers Student Athlete Screenings involve

Blood Pressure’s- Evaluates the Systolic and Diastolic Pressure

EKG’s- Evaluates the Electrical Activity of the heart

Echocardiogram’s(Ultrasound)Evaluates internal anatomy, looking at
heart chambers, valves, movement, blood flow through the chambers,
and blood flow through the coronary arteries. No other screening
evaluates the coronary arteries as we do.

CURRENT FACTS: SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH ( SCD/SCA) in young athletes

In the United States, a young competitive athlete experiences
a cardiac event every three days.

SCA is the #1 killer of student athletes in the U.S.

SCA is the #2 medical cause of death in youth under 25

SCA is the leading cause of death on school campuses

SCA is one of the leading causes of death in the US(over
600,000)

17.5 years is the average age when Sudden Cardiac Death
occurs in young athletes

Basketball and football players make up more than two thirds
(67%) of young athletes who die suddenly during games.

In almost all cases, a preventive screening would have
detected the underlying problem and saved a life!
